10. Gareth Bale – Tottenham to Real Madrid

On 1 September 2013, Spanish club Real Madrid announced that they had reached an agreement for the transfer of Bale,signing a six-year deal in a then world record deal.The deal costed €100 million, which is be above Cristiano Ronaldo’s transfer record fee of €94 million. Bale was assigned the number 11 shirt at Madrid.

9. Cristano Ronaldo – Real Madrid to Juventus

On 10 July 2018, Ronaldo signed a four-year contract with Italian club Juventus after completing a €100 million transfer, which included an additional €12 million in other fees, and solidarity contributions to Ronaldo’s youth clubs. The transfer was the highest ever for a player over 30 years old, and the highest ever paid by an Italian club. Upon signing, Ronaldo cited his need for a new challenge as his rationale for departing Real Madrid, but later attributed the transfer to the lack of support he felt was shown by club president Florentino Pérez.

8. Eden Hazard – Chelsea to Real Madrid

On 7 June 2019, Real Madrid announced on their website that Hazard would be signing for them for the 2019–20 season. He signed a contract until 30 June 2024 for an initially reported fee of approximately €100 million, which may rise to €146.1 million due to additional fees and will be earning an expected £400,000 per week.

Hazard was formally unveiled in front of 50,000 fans on 13 June 2019 at the Santiago Bernabéu. Hazard became Real Madrid’s most expensive player after Gareth Bale who was signed for €101 million in 2013. Should any of the variables be met, Hazard would then become Madrid’s most expensive player in their history.

7. Paul Pogba – Juventus to Manchester United

On 8 August 2016, Pogba returned to former club, Manchester United, on a five-year contract for a then-record for highest football transfer fee at €105 million, plus bonuses of €5 million, surpassing the former record holder Gareth Bale.

The Football Association announced that Pogba would be suspended for Manchester United’s opening Premier League fixture of the 2016–17 season against Bournemouth, due to two yellow cards he had accumulated in the previous season’s edition of the Coppa Italia with Juventus. On 19 August, he made his first appearance since returning to the club in a 2–0 home victory over Southampton in the Premier League.

6. Ousmane Dembele – Borussia Dortmund to Barcelona

On 25 August 2017, Barcelona announced that they had reached an agreement to sign Dembele for €105 million plus a reported €40 million add-ons. On 28 August, he had his medical and signed a five-year contract, with his buyout clause set at €400 million.

Barcelona had just sold Neymar to Paris Saint-Germain for €222 million, so the deal meant that Dembele became the joint-second most expensive player, along with Paul Pogba. He was handed the number 11 jersey that was previously held by Neymar.

5. Philippe Coutinho – Liverpool to Barcelona

On 6 January 2018, Liverpool confirmed they had reached an agreement with Barcelona for the transfer of Coutinho. His transfer fee was reported to be an initial €120 million million, which could rise to €166 million with various clauses being met.

During his medical, he was diagnosed with a thigh injury sustained a few days before joining Barcelona, ruling him out for three weeks. He made his debut for Barcelona on 25 January 2018, in a 2–0 (2–1 on aggregate) win against his former club Espanyol in the quarter-finals of the Copa del Rey, coming on as a 68th-minute substitute for captain Andrés Iniesta

4. Antoine Griezmann – Atletico Madrid to Barcelona

On 12 July 2019, Barcelona announced the signing of Griezmann after they paid his €120 million buy-out clause, with the player set to sign a five-year contract with the club. Later that day, however, Atletico Madrid disputed Barcelona’s deal to sign the player, stating that the fee paid falls €80 million short of his release clause, claiming that Griezmann had agreed to move to the Nou Camp before 1 July, when his €200 million buy-out clause was lowered to €120 million.

Atletico later stated they have “started the procedures it considers appropriate for the defense of its legitimate rights and interests” as a result of any deal, with reports in Spanish media suggesting the club planned to go to football’s governing body FIFA to argue their case. On 14 July, Griezmann was presented at the Camp Nou and was handed the number 17 shirt, and made his debut in a pre-season friendly in Japan against Chelsea.

3. Joao Felix – Benfica to Atletico Madrid

On 3 July 2019, Felix signed a seven-year contract with Spanish club Atlético Madrid for a transfer fee of €126 million the third highest ever paid in football. It was Benfica’s biggest transfer and Atletico’s most expensive signing as well as the second highest for a teenager – after Kylian Mbappé.

The La Liga side initially paid €30 million and the rest €96 million via installments, thus surpassing Felix’s €120 million release clause, and with Benfica paying €12 million in mediation services.Upon his arrival to the club he was handed the number 7 shirt, previously worn by Antoine Griezmann.

On 31 August 2017, Paris Saint-Germain announced the signing of Mbappe from Monaco on loan. The fee required for a subsequent full transfer was set at a rumoured €145 million plus €35 million in add-ons, making him the most expensive teenager ever, the most expensive transfer ever within a domestic league, and potentially the second most expensive player ever, behind teammate Neymar. He was handed the number 29 shirt upon arrival in the French capital.

1. Neymar – Barcelona to Paris Saint-Germain

On 3 August 2017, Barcelona announced that Neymar’s legal representatives made a payment of €222 million to the club, equal to the release clause of his contract, which constituted the most expensive transfer ever.  According to the BBC, in Spain, the release clause must be activated by the footballer himself. The situation was unusual, in that the fee was paid to the club directly, after La Liga had refused to receive the payment.

Usually, the buyout clause is deposited with La Liga in order to release the player from his contract, and the league then passes the money to the selling club. Neymar joined French club Paris Saint-Germain on a contract that would run until 2022. He was offered the number 10 jersey by Javier Pastore as a “welcome gift”.
