Liverpool looking set to sign Lambert

Brendan Rodgers is close to pulling off a shock £7million move to bring Southampton striker Rickie Lambert to Anfield.

Liverpool boss Rodgers wants to add some extra force to his already dangerous attack, and Lambert has emerged a surprise target. It means that The Reds could end up signing 3 Southampton players this summer, with Rodgers also showing interest in Dejan Lovren and Adam Lallana, though The Reds are struggling to negotiate a deal for Lallana.

The move for Lambert has come completely out of blue, but would certainly appeal to Lambert, who is a ‘born and bred’ scouser, and was released by Liverpool as a youngster before moving to Southampton.

He has earned a place in Roy Hodgson’s World Cup squad for Brazil this summer after an impressive season at St. Mary’s. Rodgers is apparently an admirer of his hold up play, and would see him as a ‘plan B’ and something different when his team need it next season. Rodgers will also want several options up front with the challenge of Champions League football involved next season, and while he might not be first choice ahead of Daniel Sturridge and Luis Suarez, he will be part of a more in-depth squad for the new season.

Liverpool would need a lot of persuasion in order to get The Saints to sell, though they have also shown interest in Swansea’s Wilfried Bony. The Reds have also today made a bid for Sevilla left-back Alberto Moreno, as they look to strengthen defence as well as attack.
