Sir Alex Ferguson contacted Ryan Giggs during his first training session, according to reports

Giggs will be in the dug-out for the first time on Saturday, as the Red Devils look for an immediate response after David Moyes’s sacking.

And as the Welshman put the players through their paces, he was told “The Gaffer is on the phone!”, having starred under Ferguson for 22 years.

It is said to be a stark contrast to the relationship between the Scot and his successor Moyes, who feels Ferguson let him down during his reign.

It has emerged the now-former United boss believes the Old Trafford icon deliberately distanced himself from him as results and form got worse.

Ferguson hand-picked Moyes as his heir almost exactly a year ago but his staunch support ebbed away as the club’s decline became more dramatic and apparent.

However, the Red Devils are convinced a host of previously disillusioned players will now stay put – because the Scot isn’t in charge.

The likes of Robin van Persie and Danny Welbeck had become fed up with life under Moyes, with both players linked with moves away this summer.

One man who looks increasingly unlikely to take over at United is Borussia Dortmund boss Jurgen Klopp.

Within hours of Moyes’ departure, the charismatic German ruled out a move, insisting his commitment to the Bundesliga side was ‘not breakable’.

And 48 hours later, he has maintained his stance and insists he hasn’t been approached by United.

Mirror Sport columnist Robbie Savage is under no illusions what step United should take and advises the club to adopt a ‘Boot-room culture’ – just like Liverpool.

Meanwhile, the Red Devils are set to miss out on Southampton midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin.

Club officials have watched the Frenchman on several occasions this season but he is ready to snub a move and stay with the Saints.
