David Moyes expects a ‘mixed’ reception when Manchester United take on Everton for the first time since his departure from Goodison Park.

Moyes takes on his former club at Old Trafford Wednesday night a good six months after an 11-year association with the toffees.

The United boss accepts that some supporters will voice their displeasure when the two sides meet.

I think the reception could be mixed,’ said the 50-year-old, whose team reside in eighth in the Premier League, some three places below Everton.

‘But they know their football and they will understand where the club has gone, and they will understand that of the players in their team, I brought a lot of them in.’

He reflected: ‘I couldn’t have done anything differently (when I left).

I was running out of contract and only found out about the Manchester United job four weeks before the end of the season.

‘So I don’t know if anyone could have done it (leaving the club) any better.

‘At the first opportunity I spoke to chairman Bill Kenwright and that’s how we handled it.’

Moyes stresses the high regard in which he holds for his former employers but admits he hasn`t given any thought to the notion of celebrating if united scores.

I haven’t planned to celebrate ‘ he said, ‘I haven’t thought about it.

‘All I know is I’m manager of Manchester United but I have great respect for Everton; their players, their chairman, their supporters.

It was a great club for me, they were fabulous to me and gave me a chance to succeed.

‘It was up and down the first couple of years but we were pretty consistent after that.

‘But I must say that I have great memories of the players and what they achieved in recent seasons and I was close to a lot of them in the end.

‘They were working hard for me week in, week out and most weeks they delivered for me.’
