5. Alex Grimaldo (Benfica)

Left-back has become a bit of a problem position for United, with Jose Mourinho generally opting to play midfielders Ashley Young and Daley Blind there rather than the out of favour Luke Shaw. They will look to reinforce in January, and Benfica’s Alex Grimaldo could fit the bill. Rumours have been intensifying over the last few weeks that United will try and sign the 22 year-old Spaniard. A Barcelona youth product, Grimaldo runs tirelessly down the left flank and is strong particularly going forward.

4. Dries Mertens (Napoli)

Napoli’s Dries Mertens is one of the in-form players in world football right now. With 35 league goals in his last 33 matches, Europe’s top clubs have all taken an interest in the Belgian. Mertens has a £25million release clause in his contract, meaning that someone is most likely going to get a bargain if he opts to leave the San Paolo. Manchester United have shown interest, and the 30 year-old would surely be tempted to join up with international teammate Romelu Lukaku at Old Trafford.

3. Carlos Soler (Valencia)

Young midfielder Carlos Soler is really making a name for himself with Valencia this season, and according to reports in Spain, United have been scouting him for quite some time. Jose Mourinho is looking for a creative option in his midfield and the 20 year-old fits the bill. Versatile and hard-working, he could be a replacement for Ander Herrera who is out of contract in the summer. Soler is rated at around £30million, and United are willing to pay up according to the Daily Mail.

2. Antoine Griezmann (Atletico Madrid)

It was always inevitable that United would go back in for Antoine Griezmann after the Frenchman opted to stay loyal to Atletico Madrid whilst they were transfer banned in the summer. Atleti’s struggled this season could accelerate a move to Old Trafford for Griezmann. He looks keen on a move away from the Wanda Metropolitano and has a buy-out clause of around £90million, not much for a player of his quality in the current market. However, he would be cup-tied for the Champions League if he were to move in January.

1. Mesut Ozil (Arsenal)

Judging by reports, Mesut Ozil has emerged as Manchester United’s number one transfer target for 2018. It’s no secret that the Arsenal playmaker is out of contract in June, but the Red Devils may look to make their move in January given that there will be a big clamour for his signature come next summer. The German international played under Jose Mourinho at Real Madrid, and crucially, he would be available for the Champions League if he moved in the winter given that Arsenal are not involved this year.
