Manchester United have had a mixed season compared to their original expectations. With the arrival of Jose Mourinho, United were expected to do very big things. They had their sights set on Premier League glory. However, neither of those ambitions were met. Now, Jose will have to take a good look at his squad ahead of the 2017/18 season.
The signings he made in the 2016/17 season had mixed results. The most notable among them were world-record signing, midfielder Paul Pogba. He arrived from Juventus for £89million. However, if we’re being honest, Pogba has not yet justified such a high price tag. Perhaps their best signing of the season was the veteran striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who arrived for free. He had a fantastic season at Old Trafford but got injured late on.
United have been linked with several players so far in this summer. They have been linked with Antoine Griezmann, the Atletico Madrid striker. Any deal struck for him would likely better the £89million paid for Pogba last season, meaning another world-record. They have also been linked with Everton striker Romelu Lukaku, who reportedly wants out of Goodison Park. At the back, they have targeted Victor Lindelof, who is a centre-back for Benfica. He would be a good partner for Eric Bailly. Bailly signed last summer and has impressed in a United shirt this season.
How does the Man United first team for 2017/18 season looks like? The Manchester United line up 2017/18 season will consist of these players.
David De Gea and Sergio Romero have been the featured goalkeepers for United this season. De Gea has played most of the league games and has been outstanding as usual. His form has caught the attention of Real Madrid, who recently bid £60million for him. That big was rejected but it’s likely to be followed up with more.
United have had mixed fortunes in their defending this season. Sometimes they are great at the back, but other times, they are woeful. Eric Bailly has been a good addition to the squad, and Antonio Valencia has been great as a makeshift right-back. The addition of Victor Lindelof from Benfica will be good for United, as he is a big leader who will add quality to their situation at the back. Mournho paid £31.5million for his services.
United’s midfield was strong last season despite injury problems. Paul Pogba was one of the standouts, although he didn’t quite perform to the standard we expected. However, he did show glimpses so maybe we’ll see better from him this season. Marouane Fellaini has proved a good asset for Jose Mourinho, scoring a few important goals this season. Nemanja Matic also joined from Chelsea to provide some extra defensive class.
These are the strikers in the Manchester United FC squad. Zlatan Ibrahimovic resigned for the Red Devils despite being released at the end of last season – where he scored 28 goals in all competitions. Marcus Rashford has equally impressed. He burst onto the scene in the 2015/16 season and has continued to show good form this season under Jose Mourinho.
Wayne Rooney was a man who struggled last season. He had been at United since 2004, but went back to Everton this summer to try and get some more playing time. He has been replaced by £75million striker Romelu Lukaku, who came the other way from Goodison. The Belgian came 2nd in the PL Golden Boot race last season, scoring 25 goals.
