Winger got involved in bust-up with first-team coach

Andros Townsend’s future could be away from Tottenham Hotspur after he is being disciplined for an on-field row with one of the club’s first-team coaches.

The England international has struggled to break into Mauricio Pochettino‘s first-team since the Argentine arrived at White Hart Lane, and he’s failed to make a single Premier League start this term.

Pochettino confirmed in his mid-week press conference that Townsend would play no part in tonight’s Europa League game with Anderlecht and also revealed that the winger has been suspended indefinitely.

Townsend, who has also been fined by the club, was seen arguing with the club’s fitness coach, Nathan Gardiner, following their 3-1 win against Aston Villa on Monday night.

It’s believed the winger was feeling frustrated after seeing a debutant get picked over him by Pochettino, and after the game, he aggressively pushed away Gardiner, much to the annoyance of the manager.

The 24-year-old has now been told not to appear for first-team training and will likely be sold in January.

Pochettino Unhappy with Townsend

“When there is an action, there is a consequence,” said Pochettino. “It is because of Monday. You behave in the wrong way you always need to pay.

“We have a young squad and the player made a mistake, and when you cross the limit it is important to stop that. I am very friendly but discipline is very important to me.

“The staff need to show respect to the player and the player needs to show respect to the staff.”

“He recognised that he made a mistake.,” Pochettino added. “I can understand because I was a player and when you don’t play you’re unhappy and sometimes your expectation is bigger.

“But it was not normal behaviour. He is young and you need to understand that it isn’t the way to impress the manager. He needs to learn about football, about behaviour, about discipline, about a lot of things. Football is not only about taking the ball in your feet and playing. You have a responsibility as a professional.”
