Real Madrid were preparing to let Di Maria leave having already landed James Rodriguez and Toni Kroos this summer.
Louis Van Gaal is thought to be keen to bring Di Maria to Old Trafford this summer as he looks to boost his attacking options.
And while Di Maria has not ruled out a move to Manchester, reports in France suggest that his preference is to join PSG.
PSG’s need to comply with Financial Fair Play rules previously looked like they could scupper a move, handing United the upper hand in the race for the £40m-rated star.
But it seems that Real president Florentino Perez and PSG president Nasser Al Khelaifi have come up with a plan that may allow them to circumvent the issue.
Indeed, it is suggested that Real and PSG will agree to an initial season-long loan with a obligation to make the deal permanent next summer.
That would allow PSG a further year to get their finances in order and offload players if necessary.
The Ligue 1 champions are believed to be willing to offer Di Maria £120,000-a-week to make the move to Paris.
