The Gunners are close to completing a deal for Perugia’s Marco Amelia

Amelia, 33, could be set to replace Wojciech Szczesny at the Emirates says Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio.

The Sky Sports Italia reporter thinks the retired Italy international is close to joining the London club after the goalkeeper fuelled speculation of an agreement with Arsenal.

“Arsenal? I signed a confidentiality agreement, so I cannot say anything, I’m still young for a goalie, I’m 33 years old and who knows in the future” said Amelia.

Since Petr Cech completed an ÂŁ11million move from Chelsea, Szczesny and David Ospina have both been linked with moves away from the Emirates.

Szczesny is rumoured to be joining Serie A side Roma on a season-long loan whilst Ospina is attracting interest from Everton.

Wenger chase La Liga star

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is keen to bring in a marquee signing and has reportedly identified Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema as a key target.

Wenger is believed to have contacted Benzema personally and is looking to conclude a deal for his fellow countryman as soon as possible, according to Spanish publication El Confidencial.

Whilst the La Liga giants are reluctant to lose the ÂŁ40million-rated forward, they could be tempted by a big-money offer.

Lord Harris, a club director, recently admitted Wenger had the financial backing to sign anyone “apart from Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo”.
