Arsenal ready for Diego Costa battle

With Arsene Wenger interested in buying a striker this summer who could partner Olivier Giroud, Arsenal are set to make a pricey bid for Diego Costa.

The 25 year-old has a ÂŁ31million release clause in his contract and London rivals Chelsea were looking the most likely side for the Spainsh international to join.

Costa helped his side dump Chelsea out of the Champions League 3-1 last Wednesday when he scored a second half penalty. The win ensured a Madrid derby in the final later this month after Real Madrid cruised past holders Bayern Munich.

Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has made it no secret that he wants to re-inforce his striking options this summer, with Diego Costa at the top of his priorities.

However if Chelsea stall on the deal or the transfer cannot be completed, then Arsenal are ready to step in and try to win the striker’s signature.

Arsene Wenger will be keen to sign a forward who can either replace current frontman Olivier Giroud or play alongside him.

The price would not deter the North London club as they were willing to pay over ÂŁ40m for Luis Suarez last summer and before the Gunners’ clash with West Bromwich Albion yesterday, Wenger said of Giroud: â€śMaybe we have over-played him at some stage.

“There is perhaps room for an attacking player who can play in a different position to Giroud. Someone who can play with him as well. But I do not know yet who will be on the market.”

Although Diego Costa would fit Arsenal’s criteria, it seems as though he may join Chelsea this summer as they have almost guaranteed Champions League football every season and there is a much higher chance of winning silverware despite Chelsea’s lack of, this season.
