Arsenal centre-back Per Mertesacker is set to be rewarded for his fine form of late with a new four-year deal at the Emirates Stadium.
The German had many critics during his first season in England, due to his lack of pace and understanding of the English game, however, since then, he has become part of one of the best defensive partnerships in the league.
Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny have developed a strong pairing at the heart of Arsenal’s back-line and they are even keeping out club-captain Thomas Vermaelen.
Talks are apparently ongoing between the club and the player and it is believed that the talks are progressing well.
The 29-year-old has 18 months left on his current contract, worth around £65,000-per-week and Wenger is keep to sort out his future as soon as possible.
The idea is to offer the German a four-year deal as well as an impressive pay-rise due to his superb form.
