Arsene Wenger confirms no striker signing

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has confirmed that he is not interested in signing a striker, and he might not even sign a holding-midfielder either.

The Gunners have been strongly linked with a move for a front-man and also a central defensive-midfielder, but in a recent interview, Wenger confirmed that he is only after a goalkeeper and maybe a new centre-back.

Wenger has been linked with moves for Mario Balotelli and Loic Remy as forwards, whilst also linked with Morgan Schneiderlin and Sami Khedira as a defensive midfielder.

However, the Frenchman has now admitted that his main focus is on a goalkeeper and a centre-back, just in case Thomas Vermaelen does leave.

‘It depends whether our midfielders get through now until the start of the season without injuries,’ said the Frenchman.

‘Up front we don’t need any more, maybe I will still bring in one centre-back. I will bring in a goalkeeper for sure and we are still out there to strengthen our squad.

‘You do the deals when it’s possible, this time we could do it early and I am very happy with what I have done until now. It’s easier to prepare, but we are not the only club who have done business.

‘Some other clubs have also done business – Chelsea, Manchester United and Liverpool have bought great players and the competition should be interesting again next season.’
