Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has hailed the character of midfielder Jack Wilshere after he overcame a tough game at The Hawthorns to equalise for The Gunners in the second-half.

Wenger’s men fell 1-0 down before half-time after Claudio Yacob headed home from a corner.

However, first-half villain, Wilshere, who was guilty of losing the ball on numerous occasions, popped up and smashed home a volley to pull the visitors level.

After the game, Wenger had nothing but good words to say about the Englishman.

‘He had trouble today to find the rhythm,’ Gunners manager Wenger said on Sky Sports 1.

‘But he has character as well. He doesn’t give up, he continues to play his game.

‘I believe he was fouled a few times, pushed over and didn’t get the fouls he deserved.’

Wilshere also faced the media after the game and he admitted that the game was tough for the side as well as for him.

‘It was a tough game, coming here is never easy. We are happy with the point,’ he said.

‘It was a tough game for me. I am not used to playing on the wing, I’m still learning it, but I’m happy to do it for the team. I got a goal which was nice, I’ve always said I want to score more goals.’

He added: ‘At the end of the day when it comes to the weekend you’ve got to do your job and today we’ve done it well.’
