According to reports this week, Juan Mata is admired by Atletico boss Diego Simeone and is keen to bring the 26 year-old to the Vincente Calderon.
Speculation over the future of the Spaniard at Old Trafford has been once again raised after boss Louis van Gaal played him out of position during the side’s 2-1 win over Everton last weekend.
The former Netherlands manager is thought to be open to the idea of selling the former Chelsea man, who moved to United last January.
If Atletico do make a move for Mata then they will face stiff competition from former employers Valencia, who are also reportedly interested in acquiring the midfielder.
Spanish reports claim that Valencia boss Nuno Santo is keen to bring Mata back to the club, with the Spanish international still keeping a close eye on his former side despite having played for two different clubs since his last appearance for the Bats.
European champions Real Madrid have also been linked with the United man’s signature after he scored eight goals in 19 appearances for the Red Devils.
