44-year-old to hang up gloves after season ends

Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed that goalkeeping legend Brad Friedel will retire at the end of the season, at the tender age of 44-years-old.

The American shot-stopper has struggled for game-time recently at White Hart Lane, and is seen as their third-choice shot-stopper, behind Hugo Lloris and Michel Vorm.

Friedel has revealed his plans to return to his homeland of America to become an analyst, pundit and co-commentator for US channel Fox Sports. The goalkeeper will also become an ambassador for Spurs over the the States.

Brad’s Career

The goalkeeper made his real mark in English football during his eight year spell at Ewood Park with Blackburn Rovers. The veteran made just shy of 300 league appearances for Rovers and was seen as one of the best goalkeepers in modern era.

After eight years at Blackburn, Friedel then spent three years at Aston Villa where he went on to make over 100 Premier League appearances from 2008-2011.

Friedel will end his career in North London and has confirmed he is retiring at the end of the current season. The American has made 50 Premier League appearances for Tottenham during his four year career.

Friedel Statement

Speaking to the club’s official website, Fridel released the following statement: “I’m incredibly proud of what I’ve achieved in my career. When I first started the journey I never imagined it would be this long, playing 23 seasons in total and representing some incredible clubs.

“One thing I will miss is that day-to-day interaction with the staff and players. There really is nothing like it but my 44th birthday is here so I think it is a good time to call it a day. I’ve got some wonderful opportunities in front of me working for Fox TV and I’m completing my pro licence.

“I’ve also signed on as a Club Ambassador for Spurs focusing on the USA.  I’ve got a great relationship with the staff and Board, so I’ll certainly do my bit to help the club go further.

“I’ve had a tremendous time here and met a lot of great people along the way.  This is a wonderful football club and I feel honoured to have been a part of it for four years.

“The manager is great, while there is incredible talent in the changing room, both young and old and with time I see great things ahead.”

Record Breaker

Friedel is also the holder of the record for consecutive starts in the Premier League. He once started 310 games in a row.

Everyone at SillySeason wants to wish Brad a Happy Retirement.
