Club didn’t want manager signing players over the age of 24

Brendan Rodgers reportedly saw two transfer deals blocked this summer by the Liverpool board because they were both older than 24-years-old.

According to reports, the former-Reds boss wanted to sign defensive duo Ashley Williams and Ryan Bertrand this summer to help boost his defensive line, but only to be told the deals wouldn’t be appropriate.

Liverpool eventually landed Nathaniel Clyne and Joe Gomez as defensive additions from Southampton and Charlton Athletic respectively, but Rodgers wanted more.

Duo Wanted

The Northern Irishman wanted the club to bring in Williams from Swansea City to add much-needed experience to the back-line, but due to his age, the board refused to green-light the deal.

Another defender Rodgers wanted was Bertrand from Chelsea. However, the left-back eventually agreed to join Southampton after spending time on-loan there last season.

However, both deals were declined by the Liverpool board, leaving Rodgers with a defensive line he didn’t want.
