Chelsea defender Cesar Azpilicueta has admitted that he is hoping to keep Ashley Cole out of the starting XI and aims to do that by making the left-back position his own.

Despite being a natural right-back, the Spaniard has been recently deployed as a left-back due to Cole falling out of favour with Jose Mourinho, and it seems to be a position that Azpilicueta is taking too.

Now that he’s settled and used to playing on the left, the wing-back has admitted that he would happily play there for the rest of the season and his aim is to keep out current-left back, Cole.

He said in the Daily Star: “Every time I have more minutes, I feel better.

“Provided I can play and be useful to the team, I’d be delighted to stay on the left for the whole season.”

Despite recently being dropped, Mourinho has admitted that Cole is still in his plans, as long as he works hard for it.

The Chelsea boss said: “Ashley is a top professional, he is a fighter. He has to work hard, to fight hard, because the place is his place.

“Of course it is not Azpilicueta’s best position and it is not a position where Ashley can think that he is in trouble.

“No, he has to just work and fight, the position is there waiting for him.”
