Blues join race for Atletico striker
Chelsea have admitted interest in Atletico Madrid striker Antoine Griezmann, and will rival any offer Manchester United put forward for the Frenchman.
United’s interest was announced the day after this summer’s transfer window shut, with Jose Mourinho rumoured to be planning a world-record bid for the 25-year-old.
However, they will face strong competition from Chelsea for the forward, who has a €100million release clause in his Madrid contract. The price would easily break Chelsea’s transfer record, but they would have no problems affording it.
Chelsea made offers for Alvaro Morata and Romelu Lukaku this summer, but could tempt neither away from Real Madrid and Everton respectively.
Diego Costa could also give Chelsea a big advantage over United if both clubs do decide to launch bids for Griezmann. Costa was linked with a move back to Atletico this summer, and despite him saying he was happy to stay at Stamford Bridge for this season, the prospect of him returning to the Vincente Calderon next summer is bound to be raised again.
