Blues still want forward despite his return to Madrid

Chelsea are still chasing the signature of Spanish striker Alvaro Morata, despite him recently completing a £23million move back to Real Madrid.

The Champions League winners activated the release clause in his contract which enabled them to sign him back at a cut price.

Had Morata been sold to any other club by Juve the Italian champions would have been able to demand around £45million.

Instead any profit from Morata’s sale will go to Madrid should they choose to cash in.

Morata’s agent Juanma Lopez has also confirmed that the player has offers on the table to move to England.

And the Morata made it clear that he has no intention of returning to Madrid to sit on the bench – something he could find himself having to settle for next season.

He said at the weekend: “I do not have to prove anything to anyone. I am a player of Real Madrid and they will decide if they want me. Otherwise we will find another solution.”

Morata and Romelu Lukaku are Chelsea’s main striker targets as they bid to strengthen up front ahead of next season.

Morata moved to Juventus two years ago for £16million and went on to tin the title and the Italian Cup in each of his two seasons at the club.

Juventus chief executive Giuseppe Marotta revealed last week that Morata was on his way back to Real.

He said: “Real Madrid have informed us of their intention to exercise the right to buy back [Morata], we are just waiting for a written offer.

“Only then will we see how to proceed, but at the moment the possibility of Morata staying are slim. He will leave Turin and return to Spain.”
