Chelsea have brought in goalkeeper Marco Amelia on trial as manager Jose Mourinho is considering signing the free agent as emergency cover.

With first choice keeper Thibaut Courtois is ruled out through injury until January, Mourinho has former Stoke City goalkeeper Asmir Begovic in his starting side with youngster Jamal Blackman as back-up.

The Blues gaffer says he would like to bring in another goalkeeper and it would not break Premier League rules if he signed Amelia and played him straight away.

The current Premier League champions have room to add another senior forgein player to teir 25-man squad if he was not connected to any other club when the transfer window was closed.

The Premier League wouldn’t allow them to sign another keeper on emergency loan as it is classed as though they have two senior goalkeepers fit.

Mourinho revealed that he was interested in signing 37-year-old FC Porto goalkeeper Helton, he said: “Helton has a contract with Porto and would only be available in January.

“We need a goalkeeper now, not in January when Courtois will be available.” he added.

Amelia is a former Italy international and was part of their World Cup winning squad in 2006. However, the 33-year-old veteran has not played a game in professional football since he left Italian giants AC Milan in 2014.
