Paris Saint-Germain defender, David Luiz, has confirmed that Chelsea tried to keep him at the club by offering him a new contract.

The Brazilian left Stamford Bridge last Summer in a deal worth ÂŁ50million, but as his new side prepare to face his old side, he has admitted that he could still be at the Premier League club had they got their way.

With PSG set to face Chelsea in the Champions League Second Leg, Luiz has admitted that officials at the club offered him a new contract, but he declined and asked for a move after falling out of love with the West London outfit.

“Chelsea offered me a new contract but I also knew that PSG wanted me – and as soon as I knew that I wanted to leave.

“I was in Brazil at the time and Mourinho said it was OK, I could leave if the valuation was met.

“Chelsea wanted me to stay – that is why they offered me a new contract – but I did not feel so much at home like I did two or three seasons before.

“I left on good terms but I knew it was time for a new challenge. There were stories about Mourinho and I falling out, but he will tell you they are not true.

“We were never close – that is not his style – but there was and is a mutual professional respect.

“The truth is I did not take long to decide on PSG. I enjoyed my time at Chelsea but I knew it was time to move on.

“I spoke with Thiago Silva, and after that conversation I knew that PSG were the right club for me. I am at a club where I know I am really valued and where I can win major trophies.”
