Sunderland have completed the signing of Brighton and Hove Albion centre midfielder Liam Bridcutt on a three and a half year deal.

The 24 year old has joined the Premier League strugglers for a ÂŁ2.5 million fee, as Gus Poyet looks to strengthen his squad.

Bridcutt was a popular figure on the South Coast, but recently submitted a transfer request, to force a move to Sunderland, after the Black Cats stated their interest in him.

Poyet has also stated his interest in Brighton and Hove Albion midfielder Will Buckley, with Poyet working with the pair during his time managing the Seagulls.

Bridcutt is a powerful midfielder who will be a good signing for an underperforming Sunderland side, who are now out the bottom three following the midweek win against fellow strugglers Stoke City.

Bridcutt is a Scotland international, and made his full debut against Serbia last March.

Bridcutt becomes the Black Cats’ fifth signing this month with the Spaniard Marcos Alonso and Argentinians Oscar Ustari, Santiago Vergini and Ignacio Scocco, as Poyet looks to assemble a squad to mount a charge for survival during the second half of the campaign.

He will head straight into the squad for tomorrow’s North East derby against Newcastle at St James’ Park.
