Citizens activated his release clause

Atletico Madrid defender Diego Godin has reportedly rejected the chance to join Manchester City this summer.

The Uruguayan defender has a release clause in his contract of around ÂŁ26million, and it’s believed that City activated that meaning they were allowed to hold formal talks with the centre-back.

However, the defender then informed The Citizens that he has no desire on joining them and wants to remain in Spain with Atletico.

Contract Offer Rejected

According to the reports, City offered Godin a contract worth around ÂŁ88k-a-week, but Marca have confirmed that the 29-year-old snubbed their advances.

Godin has been a long-term Premier League target, with Manchester United and Chelsea strongly linked with signing him last year, however, both clubs failed in their pursuits due to the star wanting to stay in Spain.

The Uruguayan has made it clear that his intentions are to stay in Spain with Atletico in order to try and win back the La Liga title.
