Capital One Cup Round 3 Round-up

The Capital One Cup Third Round kicked into gear tonight with eight ties, involving eight Premier League sides.

There was more misery for Sunderland as they were beaten 4-1 by Manchester City, but the Black Cats were not the only top-flight side to exit the competition.

Sunderland 1-4 Manchester City

Premier League leaders Manchester City eased into the next round, with goals from Sergio Aguero (pen, 9), Kevin De Bruyne (25), a Vito Mannone own goal (33), and Raheem Sterling (36).

Aguero’s penalty was awarded when Patrick van Aanholt fouled Jesus Navas. Raheem Sterling then took over, setting up new signing De Bruyne for the second, firing in a shot that hit the post and rebounded back off goalkeeper Mannone for the third, and fired home number four.

Ola Toivonen pulled what was nothing more than a consolation for Sunderland in the 83rd minute.

Aston Villa 1-0 Birmingham City

Rudy Gestede scored the only goal of the game as Aston Villa won a tight clash with city rivals Birmingham City. An awful first half display from the Villans forced Tim Sherwood to make a couple of substitutions, Jack Grealish and Jordan Ayew replacing Gabby Agbonlahor and Joleon Lescott

Jordan Amavi sent in a cross in the 62nd minute which was duly headed home by Gestede. Birmingham had chances, mainly falling to Jacques Maghoma, but it was not to be their night

Fulham 0-1 Stoke City

Peter Crouch opened his account for the season to send Stoke City to round four, at the expense of Championship side Fulham.

In the 32nd minute, Crouch played a neat one-two with Peter Odemwingie, held off Richard Stearman and steered his shot into the bottom corner.

Odemwingie had a good chance for a second for the Potters, but he clipped a shot over. Fulham’s best chance fell to Lasse Vigen Christiansen, who forced Shay Given into a quick reaction save, before putting the rebound wide.

Hull City 1-0 Swansea City

Swansea missed a host of chances and fell victim to the Tigers, undoing their decent start to the season.

The Swans have beaten Manchester United this term, but came unstuck at the KC Stadium thanks to David Meyler.

It was a much-changed Swansea, with 19 changes on the team sheet, but they carved out  plenty of opportunities in the first half to go in ahead.

But they took none of those, and were made to pay by Meyler just before half-time, as he tapped home after a Maloney header was saved by Nordfeldt.

Jake Livermore made his first start since returning from a suspension for a failed drugs test last season. He played 69 minutes, and was given a rousing reception by the Tigers fans when he was substituted.

Leicester City 2-1 West Ham United (AET)

The Premier League’s surprise package so far this season, Leicester, preserved their unbeaten run at the expense of West Ham, but needed extra-time to prevail.

Joe Dodoo put the Foxes in front on 6 minutes, the Ghana forward scoring on his first home start. He fired home a Leandro Ulloa flick-on.

Mauro Zarate got the Hammers level on 27 minutes, his shot taking a huge deflection of Marcin Wasilewski.

It stayed at 1-1 so extra-time was needed. And it was Leicester, with ten changes from the weekend’s draw with Stoke, who found it. Andy King nodding in a Christian Fuchs cross to send the Hammers fans home disappointed.

Middlesbrough 3-0 Wolves

In this third-round clash between two Championship sides, it was Middlesbrough who came out on top at the Riverside Stadium.

Albert Adomah put Boro ahead in the 37th minute after Ethan Ebanks-Landell messed up a clearance.

On 57 minutes, Diego Fabbrini doubled the home side’s lead from an Adomah cross.

Seven minutes later Adomah scored his second and Boro’s third, drilling in a cross from George Friend.

Middlesbrough showed good form in cup competitions last season, knocking out Manchester City, and coming close against Arsenal and Liverpool. And they looked good in this tie.

Preston North End 2-2 Bournemouth (AET: Bournemouth won 3-2 on penalties)

Premier League new boys Bournemouth needed a penalty shoot-out to finally end the resistance of Preston.

Shaun McDonald put Bournemouth ahead in the 23rd minute, heading in his first goal in eight months.

The Championship strugglers, looking for another Premier League scalp after knocking out Watford, equalised through Jordan Hugill with six minutes to go in normal time.

Extra-time could not separate the two sides either, Marc Pugh converted to put the Cherries back ahead, before Daniel Johnson took the game to penalties.

In the shoot-out, goalkeeper Adam Federici proved to be the hero for Bournemouth, saving from Hugill, Johnson and Alan Browne.

The Cherries had nine changes from the side which beat Sunderland.

Reading 1-2- Everton

Everton survived a scare at the Madejski Stadium, coming from behind to  beat Reading.

The Championship outfit took the lead when Nick Blackman tapped in a cross from Ola John in the 36th minute.

Toffees boss Roberto Martinez brought on Gareth Barry at half time, and taking off Arouna Kone.

Everton equalised in the 62nd minute through Ross Barkley, with a fine first-time effort.

Gerard Deulofeu won the game for Everton with an expertly taken free-kick, just beyond the reach of Royals keeper Ali Al Habsi.
