Belgium international has earned Klopp’s backing despite poor performances

Liverpool first-choice goalkeeper Simon Mignolet is set to be offered a new contract at Anfield, despite his performances coming under scrutiny this season.

He has earned the backing from manager Jurgen Klopp after the German came to the defence of the keeper during Liverpool’s 2-2 draw with West Brom.

Mignolet made a fatal error when he failed to claim a corner which resulted in one of the visitors goals.

Klopp’s support

Part of Klopp’s mentality is to not single out individuals and has urged fans to stop venting their frustration towards the keeper.

After the draw with West Brom, Klopp said: “I said to Simon at half time, ‘if somebody says it is your fault, you can say it’s not true, it’s my fault.’

“I want a keeper who helps. I want a keeper who comes out and tries everything, with 20 players around him, he tried but didn’t get the ball for the first goal.”

This is not the first time where Mignolet has been labeled a ‘calamity’ by supporters and pundits, but the club have dismissed speculation they looking to bring in Stoke’s Jack Butland as a replacement.
