New England manager Sam Allardyce has named his first Three Lions squad.

England take on Slovakia in their opening 2018 World Cup qualifier on 4 September in Trnava.

And Allardyce has named one uncapped player, Michail Antonio of West Ham United.

There are recalls for Luke Shaw of Manchester United, after an extended injury lay-off, as well as Arsenal’s Theo Walcott, Everton’s Phil Jagielka, and Leicester City’s Danny Drinkwater.

Despite rumours to the contrary, there is no return for Chelsea’s John Terry. Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford drops to the Under-21 squad.

Antonio, like Jamie Vardy, worked his way up from non-league. He started out at Tooting & Mitcham, before a transfer to Reading in 2008. He then turned out for Sheffield Wednesday and Nottingham Forest, before moving to the Hammers in 2015

On Antonio’s callup, Allardyce said: “I think he’s in outstanding form.

“This is another lad with a great journey – it’s a fantastic journey that he’s been on, from non-league to now an international call-up. He scored nine goals in his first season and he’s a terrific athlete, a good crosser and a goal-scorer.

“I’m looking forward to him coming, and looking forward to meeting everybody. Hopefully we will have a good few days’ preparation and get to know each other on the basis of trying to go and win in Slovakia.”

The squad
