The Dutchman was a Real Madrid target during the summer.

Ajax want to reward Donny van de Beek for last season’s Champions League heroics with an improved deal.

Ajax are set to offer a new contract to midfielder Donny van de Beek, despite continued interest in him from Real Madrid.

Los Blancos were heavily linked with the Dutch midfielder in the summer as an alternative to Paul Pogba. However, the Madrid side postponed a move for the Ajax player on the request of coach Zinedine Zidane, who wanted the club to concentrate all efforts on Pogba in the final days of the transfer window.

The Bernabeu board still has Van de Beek high on its agenda and it is understood that it is in the mutual interest of both clubs to close a deal sooner rather than later. As a result, according to Voetbal International, the Eredivisie club wants to scare Real Madrid off by offering the Dutchman a new improved contract, which involves a wage increase.

Simultaneously, the club would reward the 22-year-old for his valuable contribution to their impressive Champions League run. His current deal runs until 2022, after signing a long term contract in 2018, and reports are still circulating that Real Madrid will return for him, especially if they are again unable to bring Paul Pogba to Spain.

As Ajax coach Erik Ten Haag explained back in August: “We will do everything in our power to keep van de Beek at Ajax. We don’t want to lose him, but when clubs of Madrid’s calibre enter the situation, things get very difficult.”
