Manchester United chief executive hoping to agree deal for unsettled Barcelona winger

Manchester United are close to signing Pedro from Barcelona for £22million as Ed Woodward jets to Spain to for contract talks.

United’s chief executive watched Barcelona’s second leg of the Spanish Super Cup, where Pedro played 68 minutes before being substituted for Munir El Haddadi in what could be his last game at the Nou Camp.

Pedro came on as a substitute to score the winner in last week’s UEFA Super Cup final against Seville but couldn’t repeat his heroics on Monday. Barcelona drew the game 1-1, losing 5-1 to Athletic Bilbao on aggregate as they won their first trophy in 31 years.

Increased frustration

The Spanish winger wants to leave the Catalan giants because of increased frustration at his lack of game-time and is a player which Louis van Gaal wants and classifies as a “galactico”.

The 28-year-old has found it difficult to break into Barca’s first team due to the sensational strike partnership Messi, Neymar and Suarez created last season, resulting in 122 goals between the front three.

Pedro has scored 99 goals in 320 games for Barcelona and during seven years has won five La Liga titles, three Champions League, three Copa del Rey, three UEFA Super Cup, four Spanish Super Cup and two FIFA Club World Cups.

Woodward will be hoping he can get the deal done within the next few days and an announcement could be made before United’s Champions League play-off tie against Club Brugge on Tuesday night.
