Bookmakers have slashed their odds on the potential transfer of Barcelona’s Sergi Roberto to Manchester United.
Roberto was a busy man last season, starting in 39 games for the Catalan side, providing six assists.
United, along with rivals Chelsea, have been linked with moves for the 25-year-old Spanish international, with the Red Devils reportedly making a £36m (€40m) bid.
Callum Bunce of Ladbrokes said: “Roberto’s versatile playing in both defence and midfield, and the odds suggest he could be the creative spark that was missed in Jose’s first season.
“United fans would love to see Gareth Bale head to Old Trafford this summer, and it would be the icing on the cake if they secured the services of both the Welshman and Spaniard.”
United have made three signings in the summer transfer window so far, with Romelu Lukaku, Victor Lindelof and Nemanja Matic all arriving at Old Trafford.
There is a release clause in Roberto’s contract, reportedly worth 40m Euros. And Barcelona are not exactly short of cash at the moment, after Neymar was sold to PSG for a world-record transfer fee.
Barcelona are not worried about the possibility of that happening and have been assured that the player has no plans to quit the Camp Nou.
Instead he is in line for a new contract that would see his buyout clause increase substantially.
