Benitez refuses to open up on transfer talks after Watford game

Newcastle United missed the chance to go 6 points clear of the relegation zone as Solomon Rondon’s header was cancelled out by Abdoulaye Doucoure’s strike eight minutes from time.

The Magpies next face Manchester United on New Year day and Rafael Benitez believes that there were plenty of positives to take from that 1-1 draw against Watford.

Benitez said: “I can be happy because before the game, against a good team, it could be a good result. But I was disappointed with the way we conceded.

“They scored in a way we could have avoided and on the counter-attack we could have been more accurate.

“I don’t talk about the transfer window or January, but I talk about the game. I can talk about transfers, but I choose not to.”

Praising Rondon, who has scored in each of his last three away appearances, Benitez added: “Rondon did well and it was a good cross [from Matt Ritchie], but the main thing is his contribution.

“He was holding the ball and linking up well with other players. So there were a lot of positives in a difficult game against a good team.”
