Sampdoria and Cagliari failed to lure the current Roma player.
Sassuolo have agreed a deal to bring back Roma striker Gregoire Defrel on loan with obligation to buy.
After a long transfer market saga that saw him nearly joining both Cagliari and Sampdoria, Gregoire Defrel has decided to return to Sassuolo.
Sampdoria President Massimo Ferrero said on Tuesday that he was expecting the green light from Defrel: “He will give us the green light. He has received so many offers, seeing as he is a great player. We must be confident.
“If he comes to us, it is because he’s already played for Sampdoria and felt very good with us”, Ferrero told reporters.
However, despite Sampdoria’s confidence, Sassuolo surprisingly emerged as favorites to sign Gregoire Defrel and they have now reached an agreement with the Roma striker, per Sky Italia. The Frenchman, who has opted to return to the Neroverdi whom he spent two seasons with from 2015-2017, will a join on a season-long loan with obligation to buy for a combined €16 million.
The 28-year-old scored 23 goals in two seasons at Mapei Stadium between 2015 and 2017, prior to joining Roma in a €20 million deal. The move will signal the end of the French player’s disappointing tenure with the Giallorossi.
