Striker disappointed with 5-1 Newcastle loss
Harry Kane has expressed his great disappointment with Tottenham’s 5-1 final day loss away to Newcastle on Sunday.
The Spurs striker claimed it was worst performance he’s ever been part of, while his manager, Mauricio Pochettino, claimed it was his worst ever day in management.
It was a result that allowed their North-London rivals, Arsenal, to finish above them for the the 21st consecutive season. Despite claiming Champions League football, it has left a sour taste in the mouths of Spurs, in an otherwise successful season.
‘I think Sunday was probably the worst performance I’ve ever been involved with,’ said Kane,
‘We just haven’t been good enough in the last few games – it’s not just here, we should never have lost to Southampton either.
‘It hurts, and it’ll leave a bad taste in the mouth over the summer.’
Kane – included in Roy Hodgson’s England squad for Euro 2016 – added: ‘It definitely makes it harder (that Arsenal finished above us) because we know how much it means to the fans and how much it means to the club.
‘When people think they’ve had a bad season and we’ve had a good one, yet they still finish above us, it hurts.
‘We just haven’t been good enough. We needed to finish the season off strong, but I think that’s two points from the last four games and that’s unacceptable considering how we played the rest of the season. All we can do is apologise to the fans.’
Spurs have still qualified automatically for next season’s Champions League and Kane is eager to check the pessimism.
‘You’ve got to try to look at the bigger picture. If someone had offered us automatic Champions League at the start of the season, we would definitely have taken it. It’s just a shame the way it ended,’ he said.
‘There are a lot of things in place here, but days like that, and the last few weeks, show there’s still a lot of work to do.
