Jose Mourinho has revealed the reason why he decided to sell Mohamed Salah during his stint at Chelsea.

The Manchester United manager does have the knack of sidelining players and did the same with Kevin De Bruyne during his Chelse reign. Salah arrived from Basel amidst much fanfare but failed to establish himself at the Stamford Bridge.

The Egyptian international then had a number of loan stints with Fiorentina and AS Roma and finally left Chelsea in 2016 when Roma signed him on a permanent deal.

Salah’s exemplary performance compelled Liverpool to splash €42m on the player and the player has gone onto set a record as he rediscovered his form in the English top flight. Mourinho said, “I think he’s developed incredibly well at every level.

“Physically, amazing development. He was a fast, fragile boy and now he’s a fast, strong man.

“He hadn’t psychologically adapted, coming direct from a small club in Switzerland [FC Basel] to a big club in England and the Premier League [Chelsea]. It was too much.

”Now he plays everywhere against any team – completely different than the potential player we bought from Basel to Chelsea.

“He was a project player then and now he’s one of the best players in the world.

“So I don’t think the fact that I know him helps me, because I knew the project player and now he’s a top player.“
