Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has been dealt a double injury blow with midfield-duo Steven Gerrard and Jordan Henderson both set to miss the busy Christmas period.

The timings of the injury couldn’t have been worse for The Reds as it now leaves them with just two centre midfielders for the five games that take place in 15-hectic days.

Gerrard picked up his injury during the 4-1 thrashing of West Ham United on Saturday, and the club have confirmed that it’s hamstring damage which will keep him out of action for six weeks, so he will miss the whole festive period.

As for Henderson, his apparently isn’t as bad, but the club are not sure on how long he will be out for as they are still waiting for scans. It is likely that he will miss the game with Tottenham Hotspur at the weekend.

The double blow means Rodgers only have Lucas and Joe Allen as fit centre-midfielders, but he is confident in their abilities to carry them forward.

Rodgers said: “Lucas has been excellent for us and he has forced his way into the Brazil side, so he has that quality and experience to step up and take the responsibility.

“Joe looks like he did when he first came here with his movement, his body work and fluency on the ball and that’s what we need right now.

“We have a number of small players on the field but if we have the ball and the other team hasn’t, I think they struggle with it.

“We need that mobility and constant movement in the midfield to get on the ball and knit the game together.

“Steven is such an important player for us, but we have other players and dynamics in the team and they have to step up.”
