Madrid over Manchester for Navas

According to reports in Spain, Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal made an approach for Keylor Navas last summer.

The Dutchman was impressed with Navas during last year’s World Cup, where van Gaal coached the Netherlands national side to the semi-finals.

His team saw off Navas’ Costa Rica side in the quarter-finals on penalties. The goalkeeper was a stand-out performer for the Central American side throughout a surprising tournament for them.

Van Gaal had already been confirmed as the new Red Devils manager during the tournament and was apparently not a huge fan of David De Gea.

He looked to replace De Gea with an enquiry for Navas but he opted to join La Liga giants Real Madrid instead.

However, De Gea has put faith into his new manager with some quality performances this campaign. The 24-year old looks set to be rewarded with a new Old Trafford contract.
