Pep Guardiola highlights Juventus defender as priority signing

Manchester City have reportedly entered the race to sign Juventus centre-back Leonardo Bonucci, and could make a swift bid in the summer in order to beat fierce-rivals Chelsea to the signing.

The Juve defender has been earmarked as a potential replacement for John Terry at Stamford Bridge, with Antonio Conte desperate to sign him once he arrives at Chelsea.

However, according to reports in Italy, Manchester City are believed to be now in the race after Pep Guardiola highlighted him as a potential summer signing.

City have had problems at the back throughout this season, with Nicolas Otamendi struggling to settle into the side and Eliaquim Mangala still failing to impress in the Premier League.

Man City Head-start

Guardiola is set to take over from Manuel Pellegrini at the Etihad Stadium in July, which is a few weeks before Conte is expected to take over at Chelsea.

Due to the European Championships, Conte will not take over at Chelsea until mid-July, following the Euros, and Guardiola wants to wrap up a deal for Bonucci before the Italian takes the reigns.

With Guardiola in the job before Conte, he has extra time to try and get a deal done with Juventus for the centre-back, meaning Chelsea could miss out.
