Magpies emerge as the surprise favourite to sign the striker

Newcastle United have entered the race to sign Queens Park Rangers striker Charlie Austin, and are now favourites to complete a summer deal.

The 25-year-old is keen to remain in the top-flight of English football, following QPR’s relegation back to the Championship, which was confirmed by a 6-0 hammering at Manchester City on Sunday.

Despite the relegation of the Loftus Road outfit, Austin enjoyed a fine personal season, netting 17 times, a feat that means several sides’ are now monitoring his movements.

Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United are all preparing ÂŁ10million bids for the former Burnley foward, who signed for QPR from the Clarets in the summer of 2013, and helped the Hoops to the Premier League at the first attempt.

Goedie interest?

Despite the interest of Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United, Austin could make the switch from the capital to the north-east of the country.

The Magpies are keen to add to their attacking ranks, with current forwards, Papiss Cisse, Emmanuel Riviere and Ayoze Perez, failing to perform for the struggling St James’ Park outfit.

John Carver’s side, who are without a win in ten games, sit 17th in the league following a dismal run of form, which has seemingly taken their survival fight down to the wire.
