Penalty miss won’t effect Ozil, says vice-captain

Arsenal vice-captain Mikel Arteta believes Mesut Ozil will bounce back and not let his penalty miss from last night effect his morale too much.

The Gunners saw off Marseille last night thanks to a brace from Jack Wilshere, but it could have and should have been a lot more comfortable for Arsene Wenger’s men.

With eight minute left until half-time, Aaron Ramsey was brought down in the penalty area, to which the referee awarded a spot-kick.

Ozil stepped up and saw his tame effort saved by Steve Mandanda, but later went on to assist Wilshere for his second goal and Arteta believes that is the type of character Ozil is, he won’t let things effect him or his performance.

“Penalties are very decisive moments,” he said. “Only a detail makes it go in or out. I don’t think it’s about confidence.

“We start thinking about Saturday now and we have time to prepare for the game in Napoli. But we have to enjoy it because we have 12 points now and [progress] is dependent on us.

“Cardiff will be very tough. That’s why we need to get back and prepare well for Saturday to make sure we get the points again.”
