Manchester United defender Rafael has asked the fans of the club to back the manager David Moyes and blame the players for the poor form instead.

The Red Devils were on a run of three straight defeats, but they finally picked up their first victory of the year on Saturday as they saw off Swansea City at Old Trafford thanks to goals from Antonio Valencia and Danny Welbeck.

However, despite the victory, United are still in seventh place and 10-points behind league leaders Manchester City, and Rafael believes the players are also to blame for their poor campaign so far.

“I agree with that sentiment 100 per cent,” he said.

“We are the ones who have to take the responsibility.

“I don’t know why everyone is looking at the manager. It is the players who have to do the job on the pitch.”

“We knew there would be a change,” he added.

“The manager had just left after 27 years and it was always going to be hard.

“But David Moyes has a strong mentality. He is doing his own job. We have to use that in a positive way.

“We have to show our quality. People are saying United don’t have a good squad. We have to prove it is not true.”
