Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand started debate by questioning the uproar around Liverpool player Dominik Szoboszlai.
The Hungarian international, who was bought for a whopping £70 million in the summer, initially pleased the Liverpool fans with his explosive performances.
Ferdinand, speaking to Vibe with Five, expressed doubts, claiming that “everyone is hyping him.”
“Everyone is hyping him, but I don’t think Dominik Szoboszlai has done (as well as people make out),” said Ferdinand.
“Oh, he’s the next Gerrard! I haven’t seen that yet. I see bare of their (Liverpool fans) comments. But one of my mates in my group always says it.
“But he is easy on the eye.”
Szoboszlai, an explosive midfielder who can play as a six or eight, exhibited great ball-carrying abilities during his perfect first few months with Liverpool.
Despite recent dips in form and an unfortunate injury, Ferdinand remains unconvinced, suggesting that the 23-year-old is overrated by the fans.
The Hungarian’s all-action approach fits perfectly with Jurgen Klopp’s philosophy, yet fatigue appeared to catch up with him over the holiday season. Ferdinand, who looks unimpressed, forecasts that the excitement may not be justified in the long term.
As Liverpool currently leads the Premier League table, attention is focused on Szoboszlai’s crucial position in their title campaign.
Whether Ferdinand’s skepticism is correct or Liverpool fans continue to sing praises, only time will reveal the true story of this high-profile transfer tale.
