Real Madrid’s interim manager Santiago Solari said that he was happy to win his first match in charge of the team. Real Madrid won their opening Copa del Ray fixture against Melilla. Goals from Karim Benzema, Marco Asensio, Alvaro Odriozola and Cristo Gonzalez helped Real Madrid to a 4-0 win at Melilla.

Solari became Real’s interim manager following the sacking of Julen Lopetegui. There is no telling whether he’ll become the manager on a full-time basis with Real Madrid thinking of alternatives.

However, Solari was very happy with the performance of his players against Melilla. He said, “Very happy, I have seen the team happy, with intensity and enthusiasm, running the full 90 minutes.  [They played well] Against a difficult opponent, who presses high and who plays well despite being in Segunda Division B, they always go up and are difficult.

They [the Madrid players] are great champions, they are very committed. If not, they do not earn everything they have earned. They are hurt because this is sport, there are dynamics that are bad and it has to be reversed. They have run the whole game, we have done many things well.”

Real Madrid’s first La Liga match under Solari is on Saturday against Valladolid
