Huntelaar was linked with Liverpool and Spurs during the World Cup, while Arsenal were reported to have made a last minute bid to land the striker instead of Danny Welbeck.

Huntelaar is entering the final year of his contract at Schalke having previously played for Ajax, AC Milan and Real Madrid.

And while the Bundesliga club are yet to convince Huntelaar to sign a new deal they are now confident that he will do so before becoming available on a free transfer next summer.

Schalke director Horst Heldt told Kicker: “There was no approach from Arsenal or from any other club.

“Klaas-Jan is part of Schalke’s core. We can definitely see him signing a contract renewal here.

“He is a great player, an absolute modern professional. He’s always hungry for success and wants to achieve his goals.”

It now remains to be seen whether Schalke’s optimism is justified or whether Huntelaar is simply looking to run down his contract before seeking a fresh challenge in a year’s time.
