The Manchester Evening News has reported that injuries to the trio have put their long-term future in much doubt.

The newspaper has claimed that boss Louis van Gaal has already begun plans to sign a world class centre-back next summer, as the Red Devils push for a Champions League spot this season.

The Dutchman wants to have his back line sorted by the start of next season and has targeted a number of defenders in top European clubs such as Borussia Dortmund’s Mats Hummels and Atletico Madrid’s Diego Godin, leaving Chris Smalling, Johnny Evans and Phil Jones’ futures at the club in doubt.

Smalling has only played in nine of United’s games this season whilst Evans and Jones have missed much of this season through ankle and shin injuries.
