Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has revealed the conversation he had with striker Luis Suarez last Summer, which eventually made him reject interst from Arsenal and stay at the Merseyside club.

The English midfielder held several heart-to-heart chats with the Uruguayan, who was seriously considering leaving Anfield last Summer due to the media reception and his lengthy ban for biting, but Gerrard managed to persuade him to stay for the season, which eventually saw The Reds finish second.

However, just a year later, Suarez eventually left and chose FC Barcelona, but Gerrard has revealed that he made Suarez turn down Arsenal.

Gerrard said: “His dream all along from the first day he came was to play for Real Madrid or Barcelona.

“Last summer when he was out in the cold and training on his own that’s the conversation I had with him.

“I said, ‘Don’t go to Arsenal’. With all due respect to them, I said to him he was too good for Arsenal.

“I said, ‘If you score 30 goals for us they will come back for you’. I have experience of those clubs and I know if you play well they will come back and come back.

“I just thought for his own sake, and to get respect off the Liverpool fans, he had to give us at least one year.”
