The Uruguayan came up against his former club at Wembley

Former Liverpool striker Luis Suarez posted a message to Reds fans via Instagram, thanking them for their support as the Uruguayan ran out against his former club for Barcelona.

Thankfully for Suarez, it was only a friendly, as Jurgen Klopp’s Reds were rampant in a 4-0 win over the Catalan giants at England’s national stadium. Goals from new boy Sadio Mane, Divock Origi and Marko Grujic were topped off by a kind own goal from another former Red, Javier Mascherano.

Perhaps thankful that the Uruguay striker was rather quiet throughout, Liverpool fans gave Suarez a standing ovation, as the 29-year-old left the field with 15 minutes remaining.

A packed out Wembley stadium – the second-highest attendance in the stadium’s history – even impressed Barcelona boss Luis Enrique, who called Liverpool’s support of Suarez “incredible”.

“A very special day. Thank you to all the Liverpool fans for the warmth you gave me today and always.” Suarez wrote on his Instagram account.

“YNWA. Let’s keep the hard work in preseason.”

Suarez spent three-and-a-half years in the Red of Liverpool, scoring many memorable goals and going agonisingly close to securing the Reds’ first league title in the Premier League era in 2013/14, before going on to join Barcelona for ÂŁ75 million.

But despite it being the return of Liverpool’s star of recent years, the Reds now turn their attention to a friendly against Mainz on Sunday, before kicking off their Premier League campaign away to Arsenal.
