Chelsea Co-Owner Todd Boehly seeks to offload fringe stars to Besiktas
Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly has been actively seeking to alleviate the financial strain at Stamford Bridge by offloading some fringe players, according to recent reports.
The club’s hefty spending spree, exceeding £1 billion since Boehly’s takeover, has left them grappling with Financial Fair Play regulations, exacerbated by the team’s disappointing 11th-place standing in the Premier League.
Boehly, keen on streamlining the team, has turned to Turkish outfit Besiktas as potential buyers for some surplus talent.
Among those offered is Malang Sarr, who has found himself on the outskirts of Chelsea’s plans since his arrival from Nice in August 2020.
Despite being a free signing, the 25-year-old Frenchman has struggled for playing time, spending loan spells at Porto and Monaco.
Youngsters Deivid Washington and Andrey Santos have also been put forward to Besiktas, with Santos already making a temporary move to sister club Strasbourg until the end of the season.
Boehly’s efforts to trim the squad during the late stages of the winter transfer window proved fruitless, but he remains optimistic about offloading players early in the summer.
Mauricio Pochettino, Chelsea’s manager, inadvertently drew attention to Sarr’s plight during a press conference in August when he responded with bewilderment to a question about the player’s future, saying, “Who?” This episode highlighted Sarr’s marginalization under Pochettino’s reign.
As Chelsea navigate their financial obligations while seeking to improve their squad, Boehly’s ongoing efforts to revamp the team’s composition reflect a commitment to addressing the club’s challenges and restoring its competitive edge in the Premier League.
