Top 10 Craziest managerial sackings of all time!

Does Ranieri make the list? Jose Mourinho? Carlo Ancelotti? Here are the Top 10 Craziest managerial sackings!

Claudio Ranieri was sacked by Leicester in perhaps one of the craziest managerial sackings football has ever seen.

In recent years we have seen some of the craziest managerial sackings ever. In the current 2017/18 season, managers such as Watford’s Marco Silva was sacked despite being a top manager while Paul Clement was sacked by Swansea despite leading them out of the relegation zone in the 2016/17 season. West Brom’s Tony Pulis was sacked despite being mid-table and Everton’s Ronald Koeman was sacked early on in the 2017/18 season.

And in 2017, Claudio Ranieri was sacked after winning the Premier League the season before for Leicester. But is it the craziest sacking ever? Here’s our top 10!

10) Roberto Di Matteo – Sacked by Chelsea in 2012

Di Matteo replaced Andre Villas-Boas as Chelsea manager in 2012, on a temporary basis. At the end of the 2011/12 season, he guided the team to it’s first ever European Cup, and was given the job permanently. However, by November, their league form in the following season had suffered and he was sacked by Roman Abramovich. He is still one of Chelsea’s most beloved manager’s by fans.

9) Ruud Gullit – Sacked by Chelsea in 1998

Chelsea were once again high-flying under Gullit, after he led them to their first trophy in 27 years in 1997, winning them the FA Cup. He also guided them to second in the league when he was suddenly sacked for reasons that have still never been properly explained.

8) Fabio Capello – Sacked by Real Madrid in 1997 and 2007

Capello won the league at Real Madrid in his first season in charge, and went onto enjoy more success with a squad he was allowed to build. However, he was sacked in ’97 after a fallout with chairman Lorenzo Sanz. He returned to Madrid in 2006, and brought more glory during a period where the club was suffering through a trophy-drought, but he was sacked after a season after being criticised for a defensive style of play.

7) Louis Van Gaal – Sacked by Bayern Munich in 2007

In his first season at Bayern, Van Gaal won a league and cup double as well as reaching the Champions League final. But all that wasn’t good enough when the teams form dipped the season after, and Louis was sacked.

6) Carlo Ancelotti – Sacked by Chelsea in 2011

Ancelotti delivered Chelsea’s first ever domestic double in his debut season at Stamford Bridge, but the season after finished 9 points behind eventual league winners Manchester United, and Carlo was sacked. Possibly one of football’s most coolest managers, Ancelotti was always so calm and composed. It was a real surprise when Chelsea sacked him.

5) Jupp Heynckes – Sacked by Real Madrid in 1998

Heynckes won Real’s first European Cup for over 30 years, but that STILL wasn’t enough for him to keep his job.

4) Carlo Ancelotti – Sacked by Real Madrid in 2014

Carlo Ancelotti brought home ‘La Decima’ for Real Madrid, their 10th European Cup. But he failed to win La Liga that season and was therefore still sacked.

3) Claudio Ranieri – Sacked by Leicester in 2017

The most recent shocking sacking… Ranieri was sacked just 9 months after guiding Leicester City to the unimaginable. They were the most unlikely Premier League champions in May 2016, but now they sit in the relegation zone, and Ranieri has been sacked because of it.

2) Vincente Del Bosque – Sacked by Real Madrid in 2003

During his time at the Bernabau, Del Bosque won 2x La Liga titles, the supercopa, the UEFA super cup and the intercontinental cup. On top of all that, he won the Champions League in 2000 and 2002, but just 48 hours after they won La Liga in 2003, he was sacked.

1) Udo Lattek – Sacked by Bayern Munich in 1975

Lattek won 3 successive Bundesliga titles and also lead Bayern to the 1974 European Cup (the first German team to ever win the trophy). However, a poor start to the 1974/75 season saw him sacked. It is the top most craziest managerial sackings ever.
