In the midst of this whole situation concerning West Ham star Dimitri Payet last season and the Riyad Mahrez situation at Leicester this season, we thought we’d take a look other players who refused to play for their clubs or country. So here are the Top 10 Footballers who went on strike list. 

Payet was highly criticised by fans of West Ham and other clubs, along with pundits and journalists, who all think the best thing the club can do is use their power to keep him at the club and make him train with the reserves. Riyad Mahrez also went on strike in January 2018 and refused to train and play for the club for around 2-3 weeks. But are they the worst? Here we will look at the top 10 Footballers who went on strike throughout the years.

10) Cesc Fabregas – Arsenal

He refused to play for the Gunners while trying to force through a move back to Barcelona a few years back. It eventually worked, and to make it worse for Arsenal, he now players for rivals Chelsea, has already won the league with them once, and looks to be quite happy at the club.

9) Didier Drogba – Montreal Impact

Drogba got his MLS career off to a fantastic start last year, scoring 21 goals in 33 appearances for Montreal. However, in October 2016 he was left out of the team’s starting XI for a match, and decided if he wasn’t going to start, he wasn’t going to play at all. He removed himself from the squad altogether and was fined by the league for doing so.

8) Spanish top flight 11/12

Players went on striker at the beginning of this season after it was revealed the Spanish Players’ Association wanted the league to guarantee wages for players if clubs went bankrupt. The discussions ended up delaying the beginning of the season by a week when players went on strike in order to get what they wanted.

8) Peter Odemwingie

Odemwingie was quite a respected player at West Brom until one night in January 2013 changed the public perception of him. Sick of being stuck on the bench at the Hawthorns, he drove to QPR, who were said to be interested in signing him, to try and force through a move on deadline day. He thought it would happen, and even told reporters in an interview that the deal was nearly done. However, upon arrival, he was locked out of Loftus Road and forced to drive back to West Brom- and the subs bench.

7) Fernando Redondo – Argentina

He was a star for club Real Madrid and country Argentina, but clashed with national boss Daniel Passerella in 1994, who banned a lot of lifestyle/fashion choices for players. One of which, was long hair, which Redondo refused to cut off as they were part of his ‘image’. The pair fell out and Redondo refused to play for 5 years.

5) Bernd Schuster – Germany

He was a top player for Barcelona and Germany, but was known for having a poor attitude. At 20 years old, playing for Cologne, he called his manager an amateur. He never played at the World Cup for Germany, after falling out with coach for choosing to skip an international friendly in order to be present for the birth of his son.

Best is one of United’s club greats but not always got on the best with the club. In 1971, Best missed a train to London for a game against Chelsea, to see an actress he was interested in. He was suspended for a fortnight.

A top player who won the World Cup with England in 1966, Eastham fell out with Newcastle in the 60’s, as in those days, footballers had second jobs as well as being a footballer, and Eastham claimed the job the club provided was unsuitable.

2) Alex McDonald – Ross Country

Alex Macdonald was a Ross County player in 1990, and was heavily religious. He was set to play against East Fife in the Scottish Cup on a Saturday, however the game was postponed by a day due to bad weather. He refused to play due to his religion telling him not to play on the Sabbath. The team lost 4-1 without him.

After a massive fallout of under-age prostitutes at the 2010 world cup, Nicholas Anelka and Patrice Evra ended up both receiving life-time bans for refusing to play after being told by the French Football Federation that they had disgraced the nation. France went out at the group stage.
