Top 10 stunning Premier League moments in football

10) Emmanuel Adebayor runs the length of the Etihad pitch to celebrate in front of Arsenal fans – September 12th 2009

Manchester City was the second Premier League club Emmanuel Adebayor played for, and was one of the players signed soon after the rich funds of Sheikh Mansour was introduced to the club. After leaving Arsenal on bad terms and being accused by fans of being a money grabber, he enjoyed a sweet moment at the Etihad in 2009, so sweet that he ran the entire length of the pitch to run and slide onto his knees in front of the travelling Arsenal fans.

9) Wayne Rooney swears down a TV camera at West Ham – April 7th 2011

In 2011, Wayne Rooney was coming under increasing pressure on the media for poor form, lack of goals, and lack of leadership at both club and international level. Queue this incident against West Ham United. His hattrick brought United from 2-0 to hand United the 3 points at Upton Park. Upon scoring his 3rd goal, Wayne ran towards the celebrating United fans, shouting down the camera nearby, ‘F***ing what?! What?! F***ing hell!’ before running back towards the halfway line. He received a 2 match ban for his actions.

8) The Suarez/Evra saga – October 15th 2011

This was a story that went on for months and months. To this day, nobody knows exactly what was said for sure and nobody knows if Suarez had racist intentions, but the Liverpool striker received an 8 match ban for racial remarks against Evra in the 1-1 draw between Liverpool and Man United at Anfield in 2011. However, shockingly, this wasn’t the largest ban Suarez ever received in his Premier League career. In addition, the rivaly between these two didn’t stop at the ban, with Suarez then refusing to shake Evra’s hand in the return fixture the following March, sparking more controversy.

7) Aguerooooooooo – May 13th 2012

The climax of the craziest title race ever. Man City were 8 points behind rivals United in April, but United blew the huge lead and the teams were neck and neck on the final day. City faced QPR at home, while United travelled to Sunderland. While United completed their job without a problem and did all they could, but City faced complications. Heading into stoppage time, they were 2-1 down and all their hard work was seeming to be for nothing. Until Edin Dzeko gave City hope and equalised. Then, with the game over at Sunderland and United thinking they’d won the title, up steps Sergio Aguero, latching onto the end of a Mario Balotelli pass and firing home to bring City their first Premier League title.

6) Alan Pardew headbutts David Meyler – March 1st 2014

With his side already holding a comfortable 3-1 lead at the KC Stadium, there seemed little reason for the Newcastle manager to end up in a touchline altercation over a seemingly innocuous throw-in. But Pardew reacted to a nudge from Meyler as he looked to grab the ball to resume play by pushing his forehead into the side of the player’s face. He was sent straight to the stands and that was followed by a further 4 match ban.

5) Steven Gerrard slips against Chelsea – April 27th 2014

One of the most Stunning Premier League moments ever. After 24 years without a title at Anfield, 2014 seemed to finally be Liverpool’s year. They were playing unstoppable football and were getting some incredible results, with a 5-1 win over Arsenal, 4-0 over Everton, 3-0 away at Man United and a crucial 3-2 win over Man City in what seemed to be the title decider. However, that was a cruel twist in the tale, as with 3 games to go, Liverpool hosted Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea, who were in between two Champions League semi-final legs. The Blues played a weakened side and Liverpool seemed to have control of the game until half time, when Gerrard let a pass from Mamadou Sakho roll under his foot and, instead of spraying out another cross-field ball, lost his footing and allowed Chelsea’s Demba Ba to slot past Mignolet. In the second half, Chelsea sat deep and Liverpool couldn’t break them down, and in the end Chelsea broke away and made it 2-0 later in the game. Liverpool had let the title slip through their fingers.

4) Eduardo breaks his leg vs Birmingham City – February 23rd 2008

Television channels still don’t dare replay the horror challenge that seriously broke Arsenal striker Eduardo’s leg in 2008. With less than three minutes gone at St Andrew’s, Taylor flew in for a challenge on the Croatian striker, but as Eduardo nimbly nipped the ball away from his foot, Taylor’s studs smashed into his leg, above his ankle and left the bottom of his limb hanging off. Taylor was shown a straight red by Mike Dean but only received a three-match ban despite calls from FIFA president Sepp Blatter for that number to be increased. Arsene Wenger initially said that Taylor should ‘never play football again’. The former Blackburn player claimed to have visited Eduardo in hospital and that an apology was accepted. Eduardo, however, could not remember the visit or even the tackle that nobody else could forget. He was never quite the same and left Arsenal for Shakhtar Donetsk two years later.

3) John Terry racially abuses Anton Ferdinand – October 23rd 2011

Regardless of which of the opposing verdicts of a Magistrates’ Court or the FA on John Terry’s guilt you agree with, the sight of the England captain appearing to moth the words ‘f***ing black c***’ on the field was a shocking moment. The pair were marking each other at every free-kick and corner, exchanging insults and abusive gestures before Terry was caught on camera seeming to shout ‘f***ing black c***’ in Ferdinand’s direction. Ferdinand was not aware of the language at the time, but the footage was everywhere within minutes. Terry received a four-game ban and a £220,000 fine. Having been stripped of the England captain’s armband for a second time, he retired from international football ahead of the verdict saying his position was ‘untenable’.

2) Luis Suarez bites Branislav Ivanovic – April 21st 2013

One of the most Stunning Premier League moments ever. By this point, Suarez was well-known for his antics and had already served an 8 match ban for the racism incident. Liverpool were playing Chelsea at Anfield, and with the home side 2-1 down, Suarez took a bizarre approach to dealing with Branislav Ivanovic, who had been marking him for the who game. Having given away a penalty to allow Chelsea to take the lead at Anfield, the Liverpool forward was desperate to redeem himself at the other end. Daniel Sturridge played the ball to his feet inside the area but Branislav Ivanovic got in the way and knocked it away to the edge of the box. While most eyes were on Steven Gerrard as he tried to put the ball back in, Suarez’s were instead on Ivanovic. He grabbed the Serbian defender by the shirt and sunk his teeth into his arm. He received a huge 10 match ban, but only after he scored a 97th minute equaliser to save a point for Liverpool.

1) Eric Cantona and the kung-fu kick – January 25th 1995

Number 1 on our list of Stunning Premier League moments: It’s been over 20 years, but Eric Cantona kung-fu kicking a fan in the stands of Selhurst Park. Having been sent off in the 1-1 draw between United and Crystal Palace, Palace fan Matthew Simmons rushed down 11 rows of Selhurst Park’s main stand to taunt the Frenchman as he left the field. Simmons claimed he shouted: ‘Off you go Cantona – it’s an early bath for you!’, and what happened next was incredible. Cantona lost all control, breaking away from Norman Davies, the United kitman escorting him down the tunnel, jumping over the advertising hoardings to aim a kung-fu kick at Simmons before following up with a series of punches. The punishment was severe: the FA banned him for nine months, calling the attack ‘a stain on our game’, he lost the France captaincy and was never selected for his country again, while a two-week jail sentence was reduced on appeal to 120 hours of community service. United eventually lost out on the title, too.
