SillySeason looks into players who should consider leaving White Hart Lane

With the summer transfer window now getting into full-swing, SillySeason’s next club under the spotlight is Tottenham Hotspur.

We’ll be taking an in-depth look into who could be leaving White Hart Lane this summer in a bid to get back to playing first-team football.

With our ongoing feature of players who should consider where their future lies, we are now turning to Mauricio Pochettino‘s side, after already looking into Chelsea, Manchester City, Arsenal, Manchester United and Liverpool.

So now it’s time to look at Spurs’ team and time to highlight five players that should consider leaving White Hart Lane over the summer.

5) Younes Kaboul

With Spurs announcing the signings of central defenders Kevin Wimmer and Toby Alderweireld this summer, it now leaves the club with seven recognised centre-backs. Club captain Younes Kaboul is now likely to be made available for transfer away from the Lane due to the stiff competition that he’ll face in his position come August.

Upon Kaboul’s return to Tottenham following a spell away at Portsmouth, he was a rock in the centre of defence and it looked as though he was able to fill Ledley King‘s boots following his retirement. However, an unfortunate injury ruled him out for a large period of time and he never quite managed to recover the form which he showed prior to his time on the sidelines.

He’s been linked with a move to Watford this summer, where fellow Frenchman Etienne Capoue is now plying his trade following his switch from Spurs earlier last week. Whether Kaboul will stay and fight for his place at Spurs or leave for pastures new is yet unclear, however with the ability of the competition infront of him, he may be looking for pastures new come August.

4) Vlad Chiriches

Vlad Chiriches in another central defender who is likely to see himself out in the wilderness this summer following the recent arrivals. The Romania captain impressed upon signing from Steua Bucharest, and won Man of The Match in Tottenham‘s 3-2 win at Old Trafford during his first few games, however he has been on the bench for large parts of Mauricio Pochettino‘s Tottenham tenure so far.

The defender is confident on the ball and isn’t afraid to bring it out of defence and into midfield, however there’s been occasions where he would lose possession in dangerous areas after over-playing at the back, which leaves Spurs suspect able to conceding cheap goals, something which Pochettino is trying to eradicate from his Tottenham side.

Roma have been credited with an interest of late, and he wouldn’t be short of potential suitors should he leave Spurs as he is still a top international centre-back, but maybe isn’t currently the right fit for Tottenham.

3) Benjamin Stambouli

Spurs have already let go Paulinho, Capoue and Lewis Holtby this summer, and another midfielder who could be transferring away from the Lane is Frenchman Benjamin Stambouli.

Pochettino is after another central midfielder to partner Nabil Bentaleb next season, and with Ryan Mason and Moussa Dembele also in the squad, Stambouli could find himself squeezed out at N17.

The former Montpellier man was used mainly in the cup competitions for Spurs last season in his first campaign at the club, and impressed on most occasions by putting in some tenacious displays. However, Pochettino favoured Mason alongside Bentaleb for the Premier League games, and someone of Benji’s talent should be playing week-in week-out which won’t be guarenteed at Spurs next season.

It’s expected that he will join Capoue at Watford this summer, with a deal thought to be quite far down the line already.

2) Roberto Soldado

Fourth on the list is one which Spurs fans deep down will be sad to see, as a lot of expectation was put on the shoulders of Roberto Soldado following his £28 million move from Valencia two summers ago.

He was brought in to try and fill the goalscoring boots of Gareth Bale after the Welshman left for Real Madrid. However, Soldado has been unable to replicate his form which saw him playing for the Spanish national team as well as scoring a bucket full of goals, firstly for Getafe and then for Valencia.

Soldado relies on service from wide for the majority of his goals, and with Spurs playing inverted wingers on the majority of occasions since his arrival at the Lane, the Spaniard is unable to feed off of crosses and pull-backs which accounted to so many of his goals in La Liga.

Galatasaray were linked with him earlier this summer, however their interest has recently cooled.

With Harry Kane the undisputed main striker now at Spurs, Soldado would again be a bit part player should he remain there next season with the club also looking to add another striker to their ranks this summer.

1) Emmanuel Adebayor

Fifth and finally is another striker, Emmanuel Adebayor.

The Togo international had a brilliant initial spell at Tottenham when he joined on loan from Manchester City where he looked the world-class striker the Spurs fans had been craving since the departure of Dimitar Berbatov back in 2008.

However, with a mixture of personal difficulties and dips in form, Adebayor has been linked away from Spurs for the last couple of summers due to first-team football not being a guarantee under Mauricio Pochettino.

When Tim Sherwood was in charge during the second half of last season, it looked as though he had re-ignited the fire in the former Arsenal man’s belly as he looked the unplayable striker that we knew from his time at Highbury/Emirates Stadium, however he’s been unable to replicate that goalscoring form again this season under the change of management.

Adebayor has publicly pledged his future to the Lilywhite‘s for the foreseeable future after stating his passion for the club and the fans, and it’s now up to him to prove that he can be a foil for Kane and show Pochettino why he doesn’t need to buy another striker to compete with him should he remain at the Lane.
